CV TIPS.

We've created the ultimate CV guide to help you present the best version of yourself to future employers.

Strengthen your CV.

KEY POINTS.

Your CV is often the first impression you make on a potential employer, so it's important you get it right. It should be clear, well structured and easy to read- ideally no longer than one or two pages. Ensure your content follows a chronological order throughout making it easy for potential employers to navigate through.

A well presented, professional CV can significantly increase your chances of landing your next opportunity.

See below our guidance on how to structure your CV, along with our 'do's and don'ts' to help you present the best version of yourself to potential employers.

The perfect CV starts with the right structure.

STRUCTURING YOUR CV.

One of the most common problems jobseekers face is not knowing how to structure their CV, so we've made a simple structure for you to follow below.

Contact details.

Make sure to use the phone number and email address that you use most often. You don't want to miss an opportunity by failing to respond to an employer in time.

Personal summary.

Make sure the first section of your CV is a summary of your experience and includes specific applicable experience in relation to the job you are applying for.

Skills.

Include a skills section to capture the readers attention by making it clear what you have to offer. Use skills that are relevant to the role.

Experience.

This section should talk about your work history and any relevant volunteer or work experience placements. Talk about business/project successes and showcase your skills and experience.

See below our best tips to include on your CV.

DO'S.

  • Work backwards from your most recent job and don't leave any gaps.

  • Keep it clear and concise- Use bullet points, headings and consistent formatting for easy reading.

  • Tailor your CV to the role- Highlight experience and skills relevant to the specific role you're applying for.

  • Make sure you include any training courses or qualifications.

  • Include any memberships to chartered institutes or relevant organisations.

See below a list of points to avoid in your CV.

DON'T.

  • Don't lie or exaggerate- Employers will verify your experience and credentials.

  • Don't leave any unexplained gaps- If you've had time off, add a brief note to explain it constructively.

  • Don't include outdated or irrelevant jobs- if it's over 10-15 years old then either summarise it briefly or consider leaving it out.

  • Avoid using phrases like 'hard-working' or 'team player' etc. without providing evidence to back it up.
